My territory was on the East Coast and part of my job was to teach New York every month. However, until I was in New York on September 11th, I realized I had to make a complete time make-up [about the customer]. I moved to New York and got a job with Pat’s team and said, “If I’m happy here, I have to come here. I met her through a friend and then she basically introduced me to fashion, so I met Jack and Lazarus from Proenza Shuler, sponsored. I’ll do what you look and do things. And they introduced me to Veronica Webb. We became easy friends. When they shot the black problem of the Italian trend, she asked me to make her make-up. So I did it and I led it to credits. It was huge. Because Pat was the only other person who made the whole make-up problem, and Guido [Palau] was the only person wearing hair. This editorial introduced me to a group of walls, which became my agency. I started with Dior a few years ago. At the time, Peter [Philips] had just registered as a creative director, and they were kind of restructuring beauty. I wanted to do celebrities and things on the red carpet, but I didn’t know how to do that because all the mockers in New York were like “Bleh, Celebrity -Make -Up Artist.” But this was when the designer invited many celebrities to sit in the front row and paid for their hair to leave. I met Chloe Sevigny through Jack and Lazarus at Proenza Schüller. They said: “We have this group of girls who want to sit at our show, but we want them to see them in a certain way.”

My father worked for the government, so I was raised, born in the United States, moved to Central America at the age of five, and was there for up to 11 years. I finished high school in Seattle. In Seattle, I took a bus to Pike Place Market, where I got magazines, faces, details, papers and I-Ds. This was the only way to learn about trends and see what happened in the fashion world. This was a truly innocent punk skirt, a corrupt time. And I decided I wanted to be in New York – I wanted to disguise and be the one who left as a kid at the club. Instead, I lived there 94 years after my mother moved there. When I moved, I started working at a concept salon in Aveda and that was where I really started.
